THE DATA METHOD / VERSION 1
A number you
can reconstruct.
The method behind our Canadian canola outlook comparison. Published October25,2026.
The inputs
We transcribe the canola table in each dated AAFC outlook. Values remain in the source’s thousand-tonne unit; seeded area remains in thousand hectares and price in CAD per tonne. Forecasts and estimates retain their release vintage. The rows describe canola seed; seed export figures exclude oilseed products.
The supply check
Exports + total domestic use + closing stocks should reconcile with total supply. Our publishing check accepts a difference no greater than one thousand tonnes for source rounding. This is an arithmetic integrity test, not an independent measurement of the crop.
The stocks-to-use calculation
Closing stocks ÷ (exports + total domestic use) ×100. Both numerator and denominator use the same release and crop year. We show the result to two decimal places. Zero or unavailable denominators are not reported as zero ratios.
The revision calculation
Compare the same crop year across release vintages. Absolute revision = newer − older. Percentage revision = (newer − older) ÷ older ×100. A zero prior value has no finite percentage change. Crop-year price revisions are kept separate from mass units.
The harvest comparison
Regional percentages and the provincial estimate are transcribed from one Manitoba reporting date. The regional spread is maximum minus minimum, in percentage points. We do not infer area weights or calculate a national estimate from provincial percentages.
Dates, revisions and missing evidence
The page date, desk check date, source release date and data period have different meanings. A failed source check does not advance the observation date. We retain earlier vintages and attribute revisions. These datasets support research questions; they do not establish farm-specific outcomes, current bids or a recommendation to trade.
Reuse and corrections
Source statistics remain attributed to their publishers and their reuse terms. You can share our headline, a short description and a direct link with CanolaOil / FRSH credit. Ask about reuse of full original analysis or artwork. Send a specific correction and source through the corrections desk.
